Hi all! So its been another month so I'm going to share some of the things I did in that time. I decided to focus on 2 projects this month. I nearly tried to do 3 but realised that it just wasn't going to be efficient. I'll go into a little detail onto why I choose the 2 projects and not some of the others I've started this year but before I bore you too much I'll start going over the projects starting with the Cabin.
So as those who read my last blog post know that this is my latest arch vis project. This whole project started when I wanted to make a little scene for a chair I had made but it outgrew that purpose very quickly. I have put a render of the chair in my new lighting studio set up below if you are curious to what it looks like as its not very visible in any of these renders.
So the main differences from last month update is the lighting. I didn't really like how dark it was on the interior shots so I created a new system for the inside. However I did like the outside lighting so its pretty much the same. Other things I changed were some of the scale of objects, locations of some, and added small objects around the place. I have thought of more things to add but I've reached a problem (don't I always). Currently, to render out any 1 of these images, take about 3 to 7 hours. This is limiting me to only rendering it out at night as I have other things to do during the day on my PC. Thankfully, the outside renders a little quicker but my ideas are more inside stuff rather than outside. I'm also very near the limit of RAM memory that my PC can currently handle. I've hard the latest version of Blender came out just a few days ago and its meant to be better with memory, however, I haven't tested with this project yet.
I still haven't rendered out the bathroom. I was going to do it over night this week but due to "Windows Updates" I have yet to be successful.
So if anyone is still wondering why I choose to do this project this month instead of others, its because I don't really have a lot of projects like this in my portfolio. That can make it a little difficult to get work like this when you've got next to nothing proving you can do the work. I'm thinking about doing another interior this month as there is quite a demand for them at the moment.
And as promised, the chair. Its nothing special but it did spark this project so I can't really complain about it.
I wonder how many of you would remember character model and animation I made back in 2014/15? Yup I'm remaking that (the character, not the animation). Quick intro for those who do not know who Davros is (as this is technically a fan project), Davros is the insane genius that created the Daleks in Doctor Who. Last time I think I did anything based around this character was when I was still running weekend challenges and tried to do a scene recreation from the Genesis of the Daleks serial. To be short with that, although I finished it I just wasn't what you would call happy about it. I was happy I did it but thats it. I don't think I went around sharing it much because there were a lot of things that generally thought were bad and the most notable was Davros himself.
I have been wanting to create a character show reel for a little while now and I did want Davros in it as I spent a lot of time on it. But, I knew that the quality of the model and animation just wasn't good enough for me to show off in a reel and without Davors I have 2 maybe 3 other character models I would be willing to use in a reel. Davros is also probably my most viewed character model that I've created so I didn't really want to leave him out entirely and have anyone question why he wasn't there. So really the only solution was to remake Davros to a higher standard.
So the new models head is more faithful to the one shown in the revived series of Doctor Who. The older one was much flatter on the face and completely missed out 2 of the 3 eyes he has. To be fair, I didn't know he still had his original eyes as he didn't open them till series 9 which came out after I made this originally. The new one has an entirely new facial rigging system with some more complex controls that should make animating, lip syncing in particular, easier. To give a idea of how much easier it is to do lip movement, on the original model you had 5 controls for the mouth and jaw and you would need to use each one to create any mouth movement. The new one however only have 1 control for that that you only need to change the location of to operate any mouth/jaw position. There are extra controls that can be used to give more expressions but they all lead back to the single main mouth control.
Other improvements include a better controller for the arm, an entirely robotic hand with moving parts, and a much better skin shader with textures.
Some of you might have noticed that the hand looks familiar. Well thats because I took it from that robot I started making a month or so ago. I have altered it to give it a look similar to the one shown on Doctor Who but I wanted one that really showed that it was robotic as apparently some people thought he was wearing a glove or something. The rig that was made for the hand was carried over and joined to the other rig but I have to make a few adjustments so it worked properly.
theThere are a few small things to be done such as creating a movement and switch controls for the chair, adding 1 or 2 more face controls, and general tidying a few things up. I'm thinking that once that done that I might bring the old model into the same lighting area to do some comparison renders or perhaps doing a video going over the new Davros showing some of the controls and stuff.
I haven't planned an animation for this and I'm not sure I will even bother with one. I'm not really comfortable with voicing things so I would need to source some audio if I was going to do one. It would still be a lot of work though as I would need other characters as well.
Anyway I think I've talked enough for one blog post. I'll probably write another in about a month as usual unless something comes up.
Hi, I'm Claude, head & creator of Adaptive Pixel. You might be wondering what brought you here and I'm here to tell you, it was a link. Here is where I will be posting what I'm currently doing and challenges I've done.
