Its that time of week again when I tell you lovely people what I've been up to. This week I have been learning and making a new type of facial rig for my Joker character so I'm going to talk about the 2 different ways of which I know of how to make a facial rig. I'll call them Shape Key Rig and Muscle Rig (I don't know there official names so that will have to do). I'll start by going over what each one is and how they differ from one another.
The real challenge with this type of rig is getting the armature to deform in the same way that muscles do. I have not finished making for fully understanding how a muscle face rig works yet but I think I have the basics down now. In case anyone is wondering, I got the idea to make this kind of rig after looking over the Victor Character rig for the short film Cosmos Laundromat. I wonder what else I can adapt from that rig to use in my own work. I hope to have the rig (at least the face) finished by next week. After that, I'll work on the Jokers make-up to make it a bit more "messier".
In closing, I believe that if you are rigging a character that will have a lot of facial movement and screen time, that you should use a muscle rig. It will take a little while to make a good one but its worth the time you put in. For other characters that either have little facial movement or are only on screen a short time, then it is not worth creating a muscle rig for them and instead should probably use a shape key rig.
Anyway its just my opinion, I'm not actually sure why I wrote this. Suppose its because I've been working on rigging most of this week and thought I should give my input in the type of facial rigs that can be used. Is there any others? I really want to know so if you know any, leave it in the comments or send me a message. Maybe I should just Google it...
