For this weeks Weekend Challenge I decided to recreate the car that I grew up with. The car was a Volvo 740 Estate which we nicknamed "the big car" as it was the larger of the 2 cars we had at the time. Sure it was old and a noisy car but it was reliable, comfortable, and had one hell of a turning circle. Plus you could fit a hell of a lot of stuff inside it which made it ideal for a large family like ours. We had it for about 20 years until the wiring finally gave out and it was decided that it wasn't worth the cost or time to repair it. Ha how many people can say they had the same car for 20 years? Kinda adds weight to the saying that they don't build them like they used to.
I decided to go with a clay style rendering this time instead of usual full colour for 2 reasons; 1 because there is nothing on the inside and 2, well actually there wasn't a 2nd reason. It just like clay renders sometimes. The hardest part of doing this car is getting the proportions right. Normally when doing a vehicle like a car, you can work from vector drawings to get the proportions right. This car however does not have any vector drawings (online at least) so I'm working completely by eye.
I'm not sure if I'll return to this next week. Its not likely but I may end up doing the whole car (inside & out).
Until then, you can keep up with me on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Deviant Art. In addition to Weekend Challenges, I do weekly blogs called the Weekly Round-Up that are posted every Thursday in which you can see what I do throughout the week. I'm currently working on a Joker character rig so I'll give a progress report on it on Thursday.
