This weeks Weekend Challenge was to continue making the character of Davros based upon the character of the same name from Doctor Who. Originally, only the torso was going to modelled this weekend but it did not take as long as expected to create it and so, the chair was modelled as well.
Work started on Saturday morning with the torso being modelled from the colar that was mae last week. Careful thought was put into the modelling of the shoulders as they have to be deformed easily later when rigging the character.
By the afternoon, the main details of Davros's jacket had been modelled and was ready for the wrinkles and imperfections in the leather to be sculpted in.
As I plan on rigging and animating the mesh, the sculpted detail was converted into a normal texture and a ambient occlusion texture to show the detail on a blank mesh.
On Sunday morning, I began working on the chair that he rides in. I think that as the chair looks like the bottom of a Dalek, that it would have the same dimensions as one. Using the blueprint of one I got a while back, I modelled each panel and placed them in as close a position to a Daleks as possible. The upper of the chair is based upon what I could see in pictures from the episode "Journeys End" but it is mostly guess work for the sizes and positions.
To make sure the size of the chair fitted the same as the Daleks, I imported one. The two Daleks were added from an old file I made a few years ago for a little video and only had there material altered to use the new render engine. They use the same approximate dimensions as the ones used in 2005. The image itself mirrors an old poster I once had on my door.
This concludes what I have done this weekend challenge. Next weeks will focus on making his robotic hand and the controls on the chair.
